Ethiopia possesses one of the highest solar irradiation levels globally, yet a significant portion of the population remains underserved by the national grid. The demand for solar energy is driven by the urgent need for electrification in rural regions and the desire for energy security in urban centers like Addis Ababa, where load shedding is common.
The local market is shifting from basic lighting kits to comprehensive home solar system installations. This transition is fueled by the increasing affordability of monocrystalline panels and the growing necessity for power to support small-scale agribusiness and digital connectivity.
However, the industry faces challenges including high import duties and a lack of certified installation technicians. Despite this, the adoption of solar panels for home is accelerating as the government encourages private sector investment in renewable energy to meet its Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy.
